Frequently Asked Questions
What makes your Mushroom Media the World's Best Substrate?
Hardwood sawdust is the best substrate imaginable. Our hardwood pellets are naturally sourced from whole logs. With no chemicals or artificial ingredients.
Also, getting your wood in pellet form allows you to control your measure precisely and create the ultimate substrate mix.
Sawdust is the ideal substrate material because it simulates the best wood form found in nature. But as sawdust 100% of the surface is ideal.
Where do you source your wood pellets?
Our pellets are sourced from whole logs. These logs are harvested locally in the United States. We have partnered with Amish providers that source their sawdust from local whole logs.
Then use their own natural in-house process to create the pellets from the resulting sawdust. They are able to do this without adding any oils, or additives into the manufacturing process.
We are even working on new masters mix blends that will offer more value for the end user.
How do you ship your pellets?
Our pellets are truck shipped by the 1/2 ton or 1-ton pallet of pellets. They come in 20# or 40# bags that are easy to work with and ideal to create many grow bags for your mushroom inoculation.
We also offer individual bag sales for smaller farms for those who want to test our substrates. We can ship from 20# to 260# via FedEx for surprisingly low rates. Beyond the 260# size, we do recommend you consider a pallet order or setting up a group buy where you share a pallet size order with other growers in the area.
A great option is to do a group buy and have the pallet(s) shipped to a local terminal. This saves a great deal on shipping for modest-sized orders.
Do you have a recommended blend for the grow substrate?
In our how to grow mushroom section you can see one of our recommended blends. We also have an exciting Fast Fruiting blend that is essentially what the industry refers to as the Master’s Mix. 50% Oak and 50% soy hulls. This is a great mix to optimize your yield, save production time, and get amazing results with several varieties of mushrooms.
Oyster mushrooms respond very well to the fast fruiting mix.

Why grow mushrooms in sawdust?
Hardwood sawdust is the best substrate imaginable. Our hardwood pellets are naturally sourced from whole logs. With no chemicals or artificial ingredients.
Also, getting your wood in pellet form allows you to control your measure precisely and create the ultimate substrate mix.
Sawdust is the ideal substrate material because it simulates the best wood form found in nature. But as sawdust 100% of the surface is ideal. So using sawdust from pellet form gives you the most stable large surface area to grow mushrooms.
How many bags of substrate can a 40lb bag of pellets make?
Many who use a combination of pellet substrate, with wheat or soybean hulls, use about 5-8 pounds per batch. This creates many bags of substrate from one 40lb bag of pellets.
Since you are added water to the mix as well as any other key ingredient in your substrate for nutrients the bags of pellets can go very far. This is one of the many reasons they represent such a great value for your substrate use.
What is the best way to save on my order?
Due to the weight of the orders shipping costs offer the best way to save on your mushroom pellet purchase.
The more you order the lower cost per bag to ship the overall order. Also, a major difference when ordering 1/2 ton or more is if you are at a business address with a loading dock and have a forklift available.
In many cases, we may be able to ship to a local terminal near you to save you even more on your purchase. If one is available we will include that price with your quote as well.
What is the standard size of the pallets?
We get this question for a number of reasons.
The standard size applies to the Soy Hull and the Oak Pellet pallets we ship.
Here are the pallet dimensions:
50 40# Bags/100 20# Bags Packaged on a Standard 40″ x 48″ Pallet
42″x50″x52″ for 40# Bags 63.19 CU. FT.
