A Day at the Farmers Market with Long Beach Mushrooms

Dustin from Long Beach Mushrooms recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at what a typical farmers market day is like for his business. On this particular morning, he loaded up his car and headed out to the Cerritos Farmers Market—a special location for him since it was the first market his business ever joined. With some of his market staff off for the holiday weekend, Dustin took on the day solo.

As he arrived, a light drizzle made for an unusual Southern California morning, but he hoped it wouldn’t deter customers. He got to work setting up the booth, which featured a variety of fresh mushrooms in mixed boxes, as well as medicinal products like capsules and tinctures.

The start of the day was slow, but as the hours passed, business picked up significantly. By mid-morning, he was rushing to keep up with demand, making more boxes on the fly. Eventually, he sold out—moving about 30 pounds of mushrooms along with some medicinal items and merchandise, totaling around $600 in sales. While not a record-breaking day, it was solid, especially given that mushroom sales usually dip in the summer and rise again in the fall.

Beyond sales, the most rewarding part of the day for Dustin was reconnecting with other local farmers, chatting with new and returning customers, and feeling the community spirit of the market. He noted how shoppers at Cerritos take their food seriously—they come to stock up for the week and deeply care about where and how their food is grown.

One memorable moment came when a young girl walked up and proudly spent her own money on Lion’s Mane mushrooms. Her enthusiasm for healthy eating left a big impression on Dustin.

At the end of the market, as is tradition among vendors, everyone traded leftover goods. Dustin came home with a haul of fresh produce—strawberries, eggs, lettuce, onions, peppers, and even mussels—looking forward to a good meal.

He wrapped up the video by thanking viewers for tagging along and inviting them to ask questions. Dustin offered to share more about how to get started at farmers markets, since several people had asked about selling their own products like passion fruit or baked goods.

In his words, “It was a beautiful market day.” And with that, Dustin signed off until next time.
